Queen Marie-Antoinette was enthusiastic about his precise and graceful floral images, as was Josephine Bonaparte: Pierre-Joseph Redouté, undeterred by the turmoil of the French Revolution, produced hundreds of floral plates that made him the legendary doyen of flower painting. The hand-coloured engravings in this volume evoke the beauty and splendour of long-forgotten Parisian gardens and greenhouses.
